Themazi buckthorn is grown by local farmers. The species is common in Central Anatolia, where it grows on rocky soil at altitudes of 3,300 - 8,300 feet. The plant’s flowers produce berries that remain green for several months, eventually turning brown or black. The berries are harvested and dried naturally then powdered. Buckthorn extract is made on water-based extraction.

Color effect: Buckthorn extract can be used to create a range of shades including orange-yellow, yellow, beige, green, and khaki, depending on the mordant and modifiers used.

Buckthorn - Rhamnus Petiolaris Boiss also known as Anatolian buckthorn, Persian berries, and sea buckthorn, the seeds. They have been used as a natural dye for hundreds of years.

Mordanting:

It is best to use an alum mordant with buckthorn dye.

How to dye with buckthorn extract?

A little amount of extract can dye a lot - use 4-10 % WOF. Dissolve the powder in a small amount of warm water and add to your dye pot. For best results use pre-mordanted fibers. Add fibers to the dye solution and simmer for 30-60 minutes depending on the shade you want. Leave to cool.

Extract vs Powder:

Why extracts? Firstly, a little goes a long way. All colorants are extracted from dyestuff in an environment-friendly way so it takes much less space and keeps all dyeing properties. When using extract you can use 5 to 10 times less than the original dye.
