Weld Seed Powder
Weld Seed Powder
Here at Themazi, we obtain our weld from local producers in Anatolia. We have several local producers who collect it for us in the summer. Themazi newly harvested Weld is first-grade quality. We powdered weld seeds freshly while it's still green after drying them in the shadow. We only used the plant's flowers, where most of the natural dye is concentrated.
Color effect: Yellow, green.
Weld–Reseda Luteola is also known as Dyers Weld, Dyers Rocket, and Dyers Mignonette.
Weld is a biennial dye plant, native to Western Asia and the Mediterranean area. It is the most lightfast of the yellow dyes. Ancient tapestry weavers in Central Asia, Turkey, and Europe used the dye. Weld is the brightest and clearest yellow flower dye. In combination with iron, weld creates a rich chartreuse, or when overdyed with indigo yields a clear lime green.
Weld seed powder bonds most effectively to fibers that have been mordanted with alum. For best results, soak your fibers in water for a few hours before mordanting, so that the mordant will penetrate deeply and evenly. Make sure to weigh the fibers first, while they are still dry. For olive green shades use iron mordant.
How to dye with weld powder:
Ensure your fiber/fabric has been properly scoured and mordanted before use.
Use at least 50g of weld powder to dye approximately 100g of fiber. Weld powder is suitable for cold, hot, and all-in-one dyebath techniques. To make a cold dyebath, pour boiling water over the powder and allow the mixture to cool before adding fabric/fiber. Leave for several hours or overnight, stirring occasionally. For brighter yellows, simmer the mixture for an hour before adding the fabric/fiber. Grey/green shades can be obtained by dipping dyed fiber in a solution of iron sulfate.
