Undyed Merino Wool

Our undyed merino wool clothing includes soft, breathable thermal base layers made from Australian merino in natural cream, ready to wear or to dye with plant dyes. The range includes the women’s short sleeve top, women’s long sleeve top, women’s leggings, men’s long sleeve top and men’s long johns.

Dyeing merino wool naturally

Merino is a protein fiber and takes natural dyes beautifully. Mordant with alum and cream of tartar, then dye with madder, weld or indigo. Heat and cool slowly and avoid agitation to prevent felting.

Why merino?

Merino regulates temperature, resists odor and feels soft against the skin, which makes it ideal for base layers for outdoor use, travel and everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions

Will merino shrink when I dye it?

Wool felts with sudden temperature changes and rubbing. Heat gently, keep movement to a minimum and let it cool in the bath.

Can I wear the base layers undyed?

Yes. They are finished garments in natural cream and can be worn as they are.

Which dyes work best on merino?

Almost all natural dyes give strong colors on alum-mordanted merino.
