Buckthorn Extract is a concentrated natural dye produced through a water-based extraction of cehri (buckthorn) fruits (Rhamnus spp.). As an extract, it offers faster preparation, easier storage, and more efficient use compared to raw dye material—ideal when you want consistent results with less dyestuff.
Botanical name: Rhamnus spp.
Color range: golden yellow to mustard; with iron, olive/khaki shifts.
Best for
Wool & silk with alum mordant
Cotton & linen (tannin + alum recommended for strongest results)
Eco printing / botanical dye workflows
Olive/khaki tones using iron as a modifier
How to use (quick guide)
Scour your fiber/fabric and mordant with alum.
Dissolve the extract in a small amount of warm water, then add to the dye bath.
Use 4–10% WOF depending on depth.
Heat gently for 30–60 minutes, then cool in the bath for deeper shades.
Dye-ready fabric suggestion: For clean, even results, try it on our undyed cotton fabric: [Undyed 100% Cotton Fabric]
Extract vs raw material
Extract is highly efficient: you typically use significantly less than raw dye material, with faster setup and easier repeatability.
Notes: Natural batches may vary slightly. Store sealed in a cool, dry place.
