Weld Extract (Reseda luteola) – Natural Yellow Dye

Weld Extract is a concentrated natural dye produced through a water-based extraction of weld flowers (Reseda luteola). As an extract, it offers faster preparation, easier storage, and more efficient use compared to raw weld—ideal when you want clean, repeatable yellows with less dyestuff and less setup time.

Botanical name: Reseda luteola

Color range: bright, clean yellow to warm golden yellow; with iron, olive/khaki shifts.

Best for

Wool & silk with alum mordant

Cotton & linen (tannin + alum recommended for strongest, clearest yellows)

Eco printing / botanical dye workflows

Greens when overdyed with indigo (clear lime-to-leaf greens)

Olive/khaki tones using iron as a modifier

Extract vs raw material

Extract is highly efficient: you typically use significantly less than raw plant material, with faster setup, easier filtering, and more consistent repeatability—especially useful for workshop and production dyeing.
