Black Walnut Hull (Husk) Powder (Juglans nigra) is a tannin-rich natural dye material that produces warm, earthy browns—from light tan to deep chocolate—depending on concentration and fiber type.
Our walnut hulls are collected in the Mesopotamia region of Turkey, shade-dried to preserve color content, then carefully powdered in-house at TheMazi.
Works well on: cotton, linen, wool, and silk.
Color notes: can often be used without a mordant; iron can deepen shades toward darker, charcoal-browns.
How to use (quick guide)
Scour your fabric/fiber before dyeing.
Start with 50 g powder per 100 g fiber (WOF) and adjust for darker tones.
Suitable for cold, hot, or all-in-one dyebath techniques.
Production: walnuts are harvested in September for food use; the hulls (a by-product) are naturally dried and then powdered on our own machines.
