Name: Weld Powder

Scientific Name: Reseda Luteola L

Also known as dyer’s rocket, dyer’s weed, dyer’s mignonette, and gaude, weld is a dye plant used to obtain a range of light and wash-fast yellow colors.  Weld can be combined with indigo or woad for emerald and leaf greens.

How weld powder is produced:

Weld is a biennial dye plant, native to Western Asia and the Mediterranean area.  Here at themazi, we obtain our weld from local producers in Anatolia.  We have several local producers who collect it for us in summer.  We visit their villages to collect it and bring it here to grind and package ready for you.

Historical use of weld:

The use of weld in dyeing is known as early as the Neolithic age.  It was used extensively in the medieval era in the production of paints and pigments, and was one of the dyes used for threads in the Bayeux tapestry.  It remained the most popular yellow dye until the 18th century.

How to dye with weld powder:

Ensure your fiber/fabric has been properly scoured and mordanted before use.

Use at least 50g weld powder to dye approximately 100g of fiber. Weld powder is suitable for cold, hot and all-in-one dyebath techniques.  To make a cold dyebath, pour boiling water over the powder and allow the mixture to cool before adding fabric/fiber. Leave for several hours or overnight, stirring occasionally. For brighter yellows, simmer the mixture for an hour before adding the fabric/fiber.  Grey/green shades can be obtained by dipping dyed fiber in a solution of iron sulphate.
