Madder Root Powder | Rubia Tinctorum L.
Madder Root Powder is a natural dye obtained from the roots of the Rubia tinctorum plant, one of the oldest and most valued sources of red dye in textile history. Our madder roots are sustainably sourced from the Aegean region of Turkey, an area known for its fertile soil and long-standing tradition of natural dye cultivation.
The roots are harvested only after a minimum of three years, when their alizarin content reaches optimal levels. After harvesting, they are shade-dried to preserve their pigment strength and then finely ground at Themazi using controlled milling processes. The result is a high-quality madder root powder with rich, stable, and vibrant red tones.
Madder Root Powder can be used on cotton, linen, wool, silk, and other natural fibers. It can produce soft pinks, warm reds, deep brick tones, and dark burgundy shades depending on mordant choice and dyeing technique. While lighter shades can be achieved without a mordant, deeper and more complex colors are obtained using alum, tannin, or iron as modifiers.
Historically, madder root has been used for centuries by civilizations such as the Romans, Vikings, and medieval European dyers. It was also favored by renowned artists for pigment production, making it both a cultural and artistic material.
